Biofeedback Helps Many Seniors Alleviate Physical and Mental Symptoms (Newsletter 3-18-24

If you suffer from high blood pressure, depression, anxiety, musculoskeletal pain, PTSD, and/or selective other symptoms and disorders, you may be a candidate for a non-invasive, non-drug intervention known as biofeedback. Chances are you’ve heard of it, since it has been around in some form for over 60 years. Biofeedback is a technique that borrows from psychology, neurophysiology, and medicine. Scientists have demonstrated that by using simple techniques such as focused breathing, guided imagery, and progressive muscle relaxation — and instantly feeding back the results to patients — subjects are able to change their brain waves, as shown through EEG (electroencephalogram) analysis, and gain desired results in both improved mental and physiological well-being. Biofeedback patients do not just feel reactions; they view them on a monitor. This seems to be part of what makes biofeedback effective. The biofeedback itself is achieved via sensors placed on pertinent parts of the body that measure things such as muscle tension, skin temperature, and even sweat gland activity. The Association for Applied Psychophysiology & Biofeedback (AAPB) [www.aapb.org] describes biofeedback as “a process that enables an individual to learn how to change physiological activity for the purposes of improving health and performance.” AAPB adds that over time, these changes can endure without continued use of a biofeedback instrument. You can search for certified biofeedback practitioners at www.aapb.org. Or you can search online on the term “Colorado biofeedback” and you’ll be presented a listing of practitioners in the state.
